It's something like

Guitar ->
Wah ->
OD\ dist
Modulations (Chorus , ..) ->
Delay ->
Amp

Here is the "general way of plug":

Guitar
Compressor/Booster
Wha (or below)
Modulation (or below)
Preamp/OD/Disto
Wha (or upper)
Modulation (or upper)
Delay/Reverb
Power amp

But there is no "true rules", you must try the different configurations to let your ears choose the right plugging order...

For example, a vibe unit will sound differently before and after the preamp...
Some effects need a clear signal to treat correctly the sound, like octaver or whammy.
Some famous guitarists will plug the whammy after the peamp, and another one will plug the delay before the preamp...

=> Just make as many test as you can!!!

Thanks Riquette

That's really helpful.
The multiple possible locations for the Wah is interesting. I'm gonna check that

thanks

The Wah sounding is very different if you put it before or after a saturation unit.

Before saturation:
Your wah will dirty your sound, and will make your drive "sing".
It is the usual configuration for Blues/Rock Wah.

After saturation:
The tone will be cleaner and more define.
It is usual configuration for metal-like guitar.
Satriani often use the wah after the preamp.

Another point is that some wah has a built-in boost (RMC, Silver Machine, etc...)
=> Those kind of wah will put up your volume if plugged after saturation, and add more drive to your sound.

Once again, the best way is to try both configuration!toothy10.gif

Wow man,

that's impressive. Now things become clear. I used to put the Wah first in my chain, but I felt that with the dirt boxes the tone gets distorted and i get many resnonance-like sounds: suddenly too much trebles or the lows are too deep.

I'll try tonight to put it after the pre (I like satriani)
